If you’re a picky eater now, you literally have a whole new world to discover. And that’s an exciting adventure – a lot of fun, a lot of learning, a loooot of pleasure. In a way, I do envy you, because those first times when you discover how delicious and satisfying some foods are, after having been picky about food for years, it’s a really mindblowing and wonderful experience.

It’s kind of like going from a black-and-white TV screen to a modern color TV.

But how do you actually get there? How to be less picky about food?

Repulsed by some foods?

After all, there are picky eaters who not just don’t enjoy certain foods – they actually can’t eat them. When they put them in their mouth, it makes them gag.

We’ve previously shared some ideas for picky eaters already. And making food on a stick can be another way to make food more enticing for people who suffer from fussy eating disorder.

The Trojan Horse Method

The easiest way to introduce more variety to your food is probably by taking something you already enjoy eating, and adding something new and unusual to it, in a small dose.

This way, you can slowly become familiar with new tastes and learn to appreciate them, without being intimidated or repulsed by something completely strange and different. Basically at the first level, it’s about “building up resistance”, so that you don’t just completely avoid new foods. Over time, you can become more adventurous.

Calm Your Mind

Now next time you encounter a new and unusual food, one that you wouldn’t usually choose, do this first: calm down. Relax. Take a couple of deep breaths with a smile on your face. Clear your mind. Say something to yourself like: “Thank you for giving me this opportunity to try this new food. Lots of people like to eat it and enjoy it. I wonder what it is that makes them like it? I wanna find that out.”

Your Subconscious Mind

You can always use selective eating hypnosis to reprogram your mind to be more open for different kinds of foods too.

I love the way Chinese people often greet each other: Chi le, mai you? This means: Have you eaten already?

With A Little Help From Your Friends

When you are about to try enjoying a new food, get together with a friend and tell him or her what you want to do. Make it a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

If your friend is someone who really loves food, that’s even better.

I don’t know how long you’ve been picky about food. If you’re like most picky eaters I’ve met, it’s probably been many, many years already, since you were a kid.

Don’t let that discourage you. The past is not the future, and you can choose yourself how you want to be and what you want to eat. If you think there’s something about you that you want to change or improve, you can do it if you put in the right effort.
