The 5 Most Common Causes Of Divorce

by Bob Walsh

A marriage can be a beautiful thing, but it’s not the fairy tale most people believe it to be when they celebrate their wedding. Building and maintaining a lasting relationship can be really hard. And if you want to make sure that you have a happy marriage, or rebuild your marriage, then it makes sense to know about the things which most commonly cause a divorce.

And these are, according to a recent study which the Huffington Post reported about:

  1. Cheating
  2. Dishonesty
  3. Addictions
  4. Abuse
  5. Major changes in priorities

Interestingly, cheating often causes trouble even after the couple has “moved on”. A typical scenario is that one person has cheated, then the other person finds out, and after all the usual fights and drama, they decide that they still want to stay together, and the wrongdoer promises not to cheat again. However, the partner who got cheated on often keeps punishing the other partner, which ultimately causes the marriage to crumble.

And when it came to addictions, they most often caused a divorce when they weren’t an issue at the beginning. The most commonly cited kinds of addictions were alcohol, gambling, drugs and pornography. One of the main reasons why addictions can destroy marriages is that they undermine the trust because the partner can’t rely on consistent behavior from the addicted partner.
