The secret of being a great dad is that you give your child time and attention. This sounds simple, but it’s probably the most important and crucial one.
Because that is really what every child wants the most from his dad: quality time. A kid wants that much more than the new x-box or WII or whatever fancy toy (well, unless you wait too many years…).
One of the best things you can do to be a great dad is to be a great human being. And one of the best ways to be a great human being is to simply ask yourself: “If I was my child right now, what advice would I give my kid?”
So for example imagine you’re working in the office all day, and then you come home and watch TV, and that’s your everyday routine. Then ask yourself: Hey, if my kid would be doing that, and then coming home and watching TV, what advice would I give him or her? I’d probably tell my kid to do some exercise instead of watching TV, or doing exercise while watching TV to stay physically fit.” And then you do it!
One of the best things you can do for your kid is to read to them, or tell them stories. Our minds are hardwired for stories, it’s the best form of entertainment there is for kids, it stimulates their creativity and increases their verbal intelligence.
The secret of being a great dad is to find ways to enjoy being one.
You see, if you look at your role as a father as just another duty or responsibility, something else you need to take care of, you won’t have the emotional energy to take good care of your kids in the long run. What’s more, you’re missing out on one of the greatest experiences every man can have: being a father.
Sure, raising a child is a lot of work. I’m surely not disagreeing with that. And it’s not always fun and play – but so is life.
When you think or feel different about being a dad than you would like to think, fortunately there are things you can do to change your attitude. You see, too many men just accept their attitudes towards parenting as something given, something they can’t influence or change. But your attitude is created by your own mind, and you can control your own mind.
I personally recommend every new dad to try hypnosis to put themselves into the right state of mind and prepare themselves for the challenges and changes that wait for them when they become a new dad.
After all, when you give a speech, you probably prepare yourself for it – you think about what you want to say, and you rehearse giving the speech, at least in your mind, but maybe actually by speaking it out loud.
Now when you’re a dad, you can do the same thing. You can prepare and prime yourself to be a great dad.
