This was the question Aditya sent me: What can I do to stop worrying so much?
I’ve written about excessive worrying before, but this is such a big topic that it can really be looked at from different angles.
Keep in mind that most things that you worry about will never happen. And there really is not much sense in feeling bad about things that never happen.
Then there are things we worry about that we have no control over. For example, if you worry about war breaking lose, well, there is not much you can do about it, and there is no use in worrying about it.
Transform Worries Into Action Steps
The things that you worry about and you ca do something about, well, fix them. Of course, this is not always easy, but what you can do every time when you worry is to ask yourself: “What can I do to fix this problem?” And then come up with a concrete, actionable task, and write that down on a todo list. You see, what this helps you to do is to get all your diffuse worries out of your head, translate them into something you can do and bring them down on paper – this is a great way to clear up your mind and get the mental clarity and clearness that “the big fog of worries” takes away from you.
Relax Your Worries Away
You can’t really worry when your body is totally relaxed. Worries can only exist when there is tension somewhere in your muscles. Breathe in deeply, breathe out completely. Imagine that with every breath you take, pleasant feelings of peace and relaxation enter your mind, fresh oxygen, and when you breath out, stale air and worries leave your body and fall down to the ground, where they get absorbed into the earth and turned into nutrients for plants.
Think About Something Else
Next time you catch yourself worrying, simply think about something else.
Don’t try to not worry. Because that’s really hard. Instead, do something else, think about something else, listen to a song and sing along and dance. Watch a funny movie and laugh out loud. Have a conversation with a friend. Do some brain teasers. Whatever. The first thing is to fill your mind with something else, something that leaves no space for any worries.
Fight Worries With Gratitude
Think about what you have in your life that you feel grateful for. What is it that you would miss if it’s gone?
See, we often don’t appreciate the good things we have, because well, we’ve gotten used to them, we became accustomed to them, we take them for granted. And whenever we take things for granted, they stop to give us joy, and in a way, become worthless. Unless we look at these things with a pair of fresh eyes and see them for what they truly are: blessings!
So next time you catch yourself worrying, think about 5 good things you have in your life and spend some minutes being grateful for these things.
Be Inspired And Uplifted
Sometimes it’s hard to pull yourself out of the mud. So let someone else help you.
Oftentimes all it takes are the right words. No language is more precise and powerful when it comes to changing your mind from worries to productive thoughts than hypnosis can be. That’s why we so strongly recommend hypnosis to stop worrying.
