One of the most important skills in life is learning. Many people won’t agree with that. But I’m 100% sure. I love learning. And I believe learning can make the world a better place.
I hate that so many people feel bad about learning. And I know why: school. What happens in most schools is really the rape of learning. Learning get’s abused.
Learning get’s turned into something kids dread. Even though humans are natural born learning machines (until they enter school that is).
I think life is all about learning. And I think you should learn a lot. And in order to learn a lot, you gotta learn fast.
I don’t care what you learn. There are millions of things you could learn about.
Learn painting. Learn math. Learn writing. Learn hypnosis. Learn how to make other people smile. Learn how to build better headphones. Learn to code. Learn to cook. Learn how to make your hair. Learn how to walk better. Learn how to breathe more fully. Learn to swim. Learn to build a company. Learn to be an awesome employee. Learn to manage teams. Learn another language. Learn to be kind. Learn to sing.
I could go on and on like this.
I have this funny little model of the world in my head. You know why there are so many people in this world? All these billions of people? Because there are billions of things to learn about. And if you connect them together in new ways, you create more awesomeness.
You can learn about many different things. Or about one thing really deep. One isn’t better or worse than the other. The great thing about learning is that it’s always useful if you apply it the right way.
If you want to be an entrepreneur, or someone who creates things, then learning about a lot of things – like Steve Jobs did – is probably the best thing. And if you want to be part of something big and really move it forward, then learning deeply about one thing is probably the way to go.
But you don’t need to learn with an end in mind. Instead, follow your interests and passions. Even if you don’t see a final destination, or you sometimes feel like a ship without a navigation system. Your interests and passions, the things that resonate with you, are your navigation system, even if you can’t mark the spot where your journey will lead you with a nice big red X on the map of your life yet.
So one of the most important things to do with your life is, I believe, to improve your ability to learn. Learn fast. Learn more.
