Why Do People Procrastinate? And How To Stop It?

by Bob Walsh

Here’s a great video that explains why people procrastinate, and what you can do to stop procrastinating.

I really like the method they recommend here. The Pomodoro technique is something I’ve used for a long time, and it helped me to get a lot more done in a lot less time.

Now spreading out little intermittent rewards can help to motivate you when you start applying this technique, but over time it will really become second nature, and it’ll be just the way you work. And instead of snacking away on fast food, you’ll find healthier ways to make sure you’re feeling good – things like drinking a glass of water, exercising for a couple of minutes just to get your heart rate up, making a fresh smoothie and anything of that kind.

Another tip they share in this video is to acknowledge that you’re very likely to procrastinate again, if you don’t put some kind of system in place, or establish some kind of habit, or actively do something to overcome procrastination.

And look at the thing you’re doing in a positive frame of mind. So instead of thinking: “Geez, just 20 more minutes of this sh*t and I can go.” Think: “Good, I got 20 more minutes to get this done. I’m doing something now that’ll give me a better life later. This is awesome!”

Of course, shifting your thinking like that isn’t easy, because our thoughts develop a momentum of your own – and if you want to change the direction in which your thoughts flow, you’re kind of working against the momentum.

That’s one of the reasons why I recommend using hypnosis – because with hypnosis, you can gently nudge the flow of thoughts in another, more desirable direction, and later on don’t have to struggle so much with your (counterproductive) auto-pilot-thoughts.

They also recommend making a list of the reasons why you want to do a task – so that when you’re tempted to procrastinate, you have something to fall back on, instead of falling into the black hole of zero motivation. And the act of writing reasons down just in itself – even if you don’t look at them again afterwards, is already a reinforcement of motivation in itself.

And their final tip is to put obstacles in the way of procrastination – basically making more difficult and effortful to procrastinate. So if you have a favorite game on your tablet that’s always sucking the hours out of your days, and you can’t resist playing it for hours, just uninstall it.
